Having visited Berlin in summer and winter, both times were a great experience, snow and all.  If you’re planning a trip to the city in the warmer part of the year, here’s 6 things to do in Berlin in summer.

1. Time out in Tiergarten

Tiergarten Park is a great place for a different pace away from the busy city centre.  It’s the largest park in the city and is home to Berlin Zoo and Victory Column.

A beautiful leafy, urban park located in the district of the same name, Tiergarten.   It’s easy to get to from the city centre and makes for a nice stroll if you’ve got a bit of time.

2. Chill out at Capital Beach

If it’s a nice, warm day pit stop at Capital Beach.  The Beach is located on the River Spree.

It’s a vibrant bar and a cool place for cocktails with views over the River.  You can grab food and there’s a DJ to add to the atmosphere.  In the summer people relax and sunbathe so it’s a nice spot to chill.

The nearest U-Bahn station to Capital Beach is Bundestag which serves the U5 line.

3. Stroll through Treptower park

It’s definitely worth visiting if you have some spare time and the weather is good.   There’s a lot to do in the park if you wanted to spend more time as there’s floating restaurants and boats. Treptower Park is one of four parks in Berlin.

4. Take a cruise on the River Spree

If the weather is really nice you should take a cruise on the River Spree.   The 1-hour trip departs opposite the Berlin Cathedral and over the bridge near museum island.

During the cruise you’ll pass some key landmarks like the Berliner Dome cathedral 1905, the DDR museum, TV Tower, the tallest building in Germany and the Reichstag Dome.

I really enjoyed the cruise and depending on who you have as your guide, it was very entertaining!

5. Chill out at Klunkerkranich

If you want to combine cool views over Berlin, without the costs of the TV Tower and with a bit more chill time, then Klunkerkranich is a great place to head to in Summer.

Situated above Neukölln Arcade mall and car park, the bar is very popular especially at weekends and in the evenings.  When I visited on a Saturday night, it was busy – you can see how long the queue was.

I went again during the day and it’s a really nice spot to have a break from the crowds.   It’s a quirky, cultural roof bar and it’s open on the evening for live musics and events.  They have a DJ and a cinema.  It’s open daily but check the times as they differ on some days.  There are two floors available but they’re not always open. The outside area has plenty of benches and chairs.

For all other drinks you can order inside. If you opt for anything in a bottle, there’s a bottle deposit of €1 which when you return the bottle you get the deposit back. Great way to stop litter and recycle.

6. Panaramapunkt viewing point

Panaramapunkt or Panorama Point is an observation deck and exhibition.  It’s home to the fastest elevator in Europe which takes just 20 seconds to reach the top, passing 24 floors as it does so.  When you reach the final destination, you’re welcomed by amazing 360 degree views over the city below.  It’s fantastic and I was lucky enough to have a great day for it.

It’s not just the views, there’s also an exhibition, called “Berliner Blicke” (Berlin Views).  It walks you through the history and the present day of the area.

If you fancy a drink or a bite to eat there’s a cafe on the first viewing platform.  Panaramapunkt is located on Potsdamer Platz and opens at 10am daily.

You can purchase tickets ahead of time via the Panaramapunkt website but you can buy tickets on the day.  When I went it was cash only, but you can now also pay with credit card.

Your ticket will include access to the elevator ascent, the exhibition, and the cafe.

I hope you manage to visit some of these places on your visit to the buzzing city of Berlin! If you’re looking for more ideas for city breaks, check out my post 7 of my favourite ciy breaks for solo travellers.
