If you’re still getting used to travelling alone and want some inspiration for your next trip, here’s 7 of my favourite city breaks for solo travellers.
Berlin, Germany
Germany is one of the 10 largest countries in Europe, so you’ll need a few trips to see some of its main cities. Why not start with Berlin?
Trendy
Berlin is Germany’s capital and is a great city to visit, especially if you’re travelling solo.
It’s quite easy to get to the city centre from the airport or train station and there’s enough to do to keep you busy for a long weekend or even longer if you need more time.
You can visit some of the popular tourist spots, relax at a spa, chill on a rooftop bar or wander some of its neighbourhoods like Friedrichshain and Hackeschermarkt, to see cool street art and graffiti.
What you should add to your list
- Berlin Wall
- Brandenburg Gate
- Memorial to the Murdered Jews
- Alexander Platz and tower
- The Berliner Dome (Berlin Cathedral)
- Friedrichstraße
- Hackeschermarkt
- Potsdamer Platz
- Charlottenburg Palace
New York, United States
New York has plenty to see and do but you can still visit for a week and still see quite a bit. I’ve been for as little as a week myself. Depending on where you stay, you’ll be able to get around easily as it’s pretty well connected.
A long weekend
You could event stay for a long weekend and see some of the main tourist attractions. It would take some planning but it’s possible.
There’s of course Manhattan to visit as well as cool things to see and do in neighbourhoods like Brooklyn or the Bronx. New York is definitely one of my favourite city breaks.
What you should add to your list
- The Statue of Liberty
- The Edge
- Times Square
- Central Park
- Broadway
- Empire State Building
- Visit New York neighbourhoods — Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx
Before setting off get some insight into travelling around New York and its neighbourhoods.

Athens, Greece
As the capital city of Greece, Athens is home to several historical monuments such as the Acropolis, Hadrian’s Gate and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. There are so many things to see and do but even wandering the city itself is cool. You’re sure to come across a monument towering above you.

- Ancient Agora
- The Temple of Poseidon
- Plaka
- Temple of Olympian Zeus
- Hadrian’s Gate
- Monasteraki

To find a few places for a views over Athens, read my post on 6 places to get sky high views in Greece.
Already The town of Bruges is lovely and draws many people to its peaceful cobbled streets and beautiful canals. If you’re already planning a visit there and with neighbouring Ghent so close by, why not just combine them both! You have to be organised and keep to time so you can make all your train connections, but it’s easy to do. Read on for how to get to Bruges and Ghent in a day from London!

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. It’s the capital of Croatia and is a medieval city surrounded by walls.
The Walls of Dubrovnik are about 1.9km long and around 25 metres high. Many tourists walk the walls on their visit as it’s one of the top activities to do. While in the city, you can also take trips to nearby islands like Lokrum or Šipan.
What you should add to your list
- Walls of Dubrovnik
- Dubrovnik Cable Car
- Fort Minćeta
- Climb Lovrejenic
- Cavtat
- Kupari
- Lokrum Island
- Glass bottom boat trip
- Šipan

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The city with narrow cobbled streets and canals at every turn. Amsterdam is perfect for a long weekend break. You can easily get around the main tourist attractions on foot and wander the Liedesplein. If you’re staying up to seven days, you should take a trip to see the windmills at Zannse Schans. It’s a completely different vibe from the busy centre of Amsterdam.
What you should add to your list
- Rikjsmuseum
- Liedesplein
- Vondelpark
- A’DAM Lookout
- Van Gogh Museum
- Red Light District
- Visit Zaanse Schans
Check out more activities in Amsterdam for you to add to you list! It’s another one of my favourite city breaks for solo travellers.
Florence, Italy
Florence is a beautiful city in Italy. It’s graced with wonderful architecture all around and works of art located in the likes of the famous Uffizi Gallery. The city is walkable even across to the other side of the Arno River to visit Piazzale Michelangelo.
A beautiful city
There’s quite a lot to do and if you’re based in the UK or somewhere in Europe, a long weekend is easy. You can see a lot, but a week will of course give you more time.
You can fly directly to Florence from the UK, but a cheaper option may be to go via Pisa and take the train or bus to the city.
What you should add to your list
- Duomo – Florence Cathedral
- San Lorenzo Market (Mercato Centrale)
- The Uffizi Gallery
- Palazzo Vecchio
- La Torre Vecchio – for beautiful views of the Duomo
- Piazza Michelangelo

Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a down-to-earth, vibrant city. It has some beautiful canals to stroll along and many grand palaces in the city and on its outskirts. Spend some time admiring the architecture and historic decor. Copenhagen is great for a long weekend getaway.
A challenge
While I was there, I stayed as close to the city as I could as I was on a budget. I was on a challenge, my Copenhagen Challenge. I stayed in Nørrebro and the location was perfect as it was only a short walk to the city centre.
What you should add to your list
- Nyhavn Harbour
- Christianshavn
- Amager Strandpark and beach
- Christiansborg Tårnet
- Frederiksborg Castle
