I love visiting islands in Greece and I had a great time hopping around the Sporades islands; Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.  Located in the Aegean Sea and consisting of these three main inhabited islands, as well as Skyros, the Sporades are beautiful.

Differences

Although they’re  neighbouring islands, they are all completely unique in their own way.  If you’ve not yet been, here’s 20 photos to make you want to visit the Sporades islands, Greece.

Skiathos  Known for its beaches (there’s about 60 of them!) and busy night life, Skiathos is the smallest of the four inhabited islands.  With ‘Skia’ meaning shadow and ‘Athos’ referring to Mount Athos, Skiathos is known to be “In the Shadow of Athos”.

Skopelos  Due to its association with the film Mamma Mia, Skopelos became the well-known backdrop to this popular film.  It sits in between Skiathos and Alonissos and is one of the larger inhabited Sporades islands.

Alonnisos  Skaithos and Skopleos are certainly the more popular islands in the Sporades but if you fancy venturing somewhere a little less fast-paced, try Alonissos.  Meaning “another island”, Alonnisos is beautiful and very serene in comparison.  It has a marine park in which dolphins and monk seals have made their home.  Take a look at my posts on Alonnisos to see where I stayed and what I got up to.

Skyros  Skyros, located further south compared to the other islands, is actually the largest of the Sporades islands.  It can be reached via a ferry from nearby Kymi, which is located on the island of Evia (also known as Euboea).  It’s more traditional compared to the other four islands, and is less developed from a tourist point of view.
