Amazing atmosphere at The Amani 180 Spa, Alonissos

Lost in the hills and hidden among olive groves, The Amani 180 Spa nestles.  While on my Greek island hopping, solo trip around the Sporades, I enjoyed the amazing atmosphere at The Amani 180 Spa on Alonissos.

Amani

The Swahili name for peace is ‘Amani’ and the spa is certainly peaceful.  The concept came about from the idea of being able to bring people to a place where they could disconnect from the real world.  Leaving behind their busy, chaotic and stressful realities — which can’t of course be completely avoided — it can be forgotten even just for a few hours.  The Amani 180 Spa is also strictly adults only so time to really relax!

As you wander along the path to the main building and pool area, you’ll already feel at home.

Facilities and amenities

The Amani Spa boasts sweeping 180 degree views overlooking the Aegean Sea and villages below.

You’ll notice an infinity pool in the main area — it was amazing!  It was great to take a dip and have such a beautiful view greet you.

There’s also a plunge pool and infrared sauna onsite.  In the main building there’s a well stocked bar, a comfy seating area, and even a pool table if you’re up for a game.  There’s also a quiet area called the Maji Deck to relax in.

The Amani 180 Spa also provides guests with private dining at its restaurant, Maisha 8.  If you fancy something a little more rustic, they will make use of the pizza oven in the garden area.

Infinity 180

Sitting alongside Amani Spa is Infinity 180 — three boutique suites available for guests to book.  All the rooms are at ground level, so great for accessibility.  They all feature double beds which can’t be split, so if you were thinking of “twinning” it with a friend, not possible.  You’ll have to book separate rooms.

On a self-catering basis, the rooms are equipped with everything you’d need for a short stay; a full kitchenette, Nespresso machine, dishwasher, oven.  There’s also the usual toiletries and a rain shower with built in chromotherapy.  The therapy shower provides additional lighting and colours to enhance your senses and bring the spa environment back to your room. Each suite is named – there’s the Marula Suite, Acacia Suite and the Baobab Suite.  The Marula Suite is Infinity 180’s honeymoon suite (for all you soon-to-be newlyweds out there). It adds further relaxation as it had the added bonus of an outdoor jacuzzi.  Very nice!

Beauty treatments

To help complete your time at The Amani 180 Spa, there are a host of treatments available — all using natural and organic products.  You can choose from massages and body scrubs, to facials and manicures.  You can even extend your experience over a few days and book a two or three-day package.  The packages differ so take a good look to make sure you pick the most suitable option for you, and they will have a focus either on cleansing, hydration or relaxation.

I was only there for the morning and although I had wanted to have a manicure and a massage, there wasn’t availability within the time I had, so I had the massage only.  After some time spent in the pool, I was shown to the place where I would have my massage.  What a fantastic way to have a treatment!  Before me was a large canopied building – it was just like something you’d expect to see on an African safari.  It was beautifully designed and very spacious inside with a massage table in the centre.  There was a small changing area at the back.

Beautiful aromas of oils and incense wafting throughout, and it smelt divine.  I was really looking forward to it and couldn’t wait to relax and take it and all my surroundings in properly.

I chose the full body Amani Signature Massage which was with Ewa.  She was very kind and pleasant.  She really made me feel comfortable during my treatment and it was nice to unwind afterwards and look out across the hills and out to sea.  What a view, what a place.  If I’m able to visit Alonissos again, I’ll definitely be booking some time there again and this time book in that manicure!

Final thoughts of Amani

manicure The Amani 180 Spa makes for a nice retreat and the surroundings really do add to the whole experience.  If you’re looking for time spent in a place where you’ll be made to feel at home, then you’re in the right place.

Luke, as well as his wife Ewa and his mum, who I also met while there, were all so friendly and helpful.  They told me the story of how the spa came to be what it is today.
